What support is available for victims of Domestic and Family Violence?

Every day we meet with clients who have experienced domestic and family violence or who are seeking support to leave a relationship categorised by domestic and family violence.  The statistics of domestic violence related crime are alarming.

A lot of victims don’t know that there are a number of supports available to assist in this time of great stress and uncertainty.  A few of the options are listed below:

  1. You can speak to a counsellor at 1800RESPECT both by telephone or online chat who will listen, provide support and assist to connect you to services local to you.
  2. Victims of domestic violence may also be eligible for a payment under the Immediate Needs Support Package which is a payment of up to $5,000 to assist with things such as rental assistance, household items, security devices and removalists. You can find out more about the Immediate Needs Support Package here.
  3. If you require emergency assistance with accommodation, organisations such as Link2Home are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  4. If you require assistance with low priced groceries, you could reach out to organisations such as Survivor’s R Us. This organisation also assists with counselling and other events and support such as free haircuts, yoga, breakfast and morning teas.
  5. If you are a woman, organisations such as Jenny’s Place or Carrie’s Place can assist to provide crisis and transitional accommodation, outreach programs and counselling.
  6. If you are a male, organisations such as Dads in Distress or MensLine Australia can assist to provide support and counselling.

If your matter ends up before the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, the Court has developed methods of screening, triaging and dedicated lists for matters which are considered high risk. If your case is placed into the Evatt List, your matter will receive specialised case management and may progress through the pathway quicker to a final determination.

You do not have to fear going to court.  The Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia have measures available to protect your safety such as, appearances by electronic means, safe rooms within the Court and legislation is in place which permits the Court to make an order preventing a victim being cross-examined by a perpetrator.

If you are concerned about domestic and family violence, it is important that you speak with your solicitor and let them know your concerns. Your solicitor can then ensure that steps are taken to minimise the impact on you.
