Men’s Behaviour Change Programs are specialised courses which are designed to address abusive, controlling and/or violent behaviour in relationships. These programs aim to reduce domestic and family violence and improve the safety of children and partners.
Typically, a Men’s Behaviour Change program is a structured group-based course that assists participants to;
- Recognise abusive or controlling behaviour;
- Understand the impact of violence on partners and children;
- Develop healthier communication skills;
- Learn emotional regulation strategies; and
- Take responsibility for their actions.
Some men attend these programs voluntarily. Other times, they can be referred or ordered to complete a course.
These programs are facilitated by trained professionals with experience in domestic and family violence intervention. The programs usually run for about 4-6 months and include weekly group sessions in a face-to-face setting, or online.
The types of topics generally covered during these courses include:
- Coercive control
- Respectful relationships
- Anger and emotional regulation
- Communication
- Conflict Management
- Accountability
